What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye happens when tear production is low or the glands that make tears become inflamed.

Your tears are made of 3 layers:

  • The oily outer layer
  • The watery middle layer
  • The inner mucus layer

We can examine your eyes and find a treatment to address the cause of your symptoms during your dry eye assessment.

What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?

MGD is a common cause of dry eye and occurs when the glands in your eyelids (meibomian glands) become clogged or inflamed. These glands produce the oily layer of your tears, and when they are not functioning properly, your tears can evaporate too quickly, causing dryness and irritation.

If you have MGD, we offer treatments like meibomian gland expression and OptiLIGHT by Lumenis to help restore proper function and reduce inflammation.

OptiLIGHT By Lumenis for Dry Eye Treatment

OptiLIGHT by Lumenis is a light-based, noninvasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.

The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.

OptiLight uses precise pulses of light to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland functionality.

Our Dry Eye Diagnostics

At Parker Eye Care, we use diagnostic technology to assess your eyes and develop a customized treatment plan. Our diagnostic tools include:

  • Automated TBUT (tear break-up time): Measures how long it takes for your tears to evaporate.
  • Dyes/staining: Used to detect areas of dryness or damage to the eye’s surface.
  • Meibography: A noninvasive scan that helps evaluate the health of your meibomian glands.
  • Subjective TBUT: A test where you are asked about the dryness symptoms you experience.

These tools allow us to pinpoint the exact cause of your dry eye and track your progress throughout treatment.

Our Dry Eye Treatments

Dry eye comes with its own set of challenging symptoms, including:

  • Stinging or gritty eyes
  • Scratchy and uncomfortable eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Fluctuating vision
  • A burning feeling
  • The feeling of something in the eye

We offer a wide range of treatment options in addition to OptiLIGHT by Lumenis to help you find relief.

Meibomian Gland Expression

Meibomian gland expression is a therapeutic process designed to address the root cause of dry eye by clearing clogged meibomian glands. These tiny glands, located in your eyelids, produce the oily component of your tears. When they become blocked, the quality of your tears is compromised, leading to dryness and discomfort.

This treatment helps to improve moisture retention on the surface of your eyes, providing lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.

Optase TTO lid wipes and sprays are specially designed products to help cleanse your eyelids and reduce the buildup of oils, debris, and bacteria that can contribute to dry eye symptoms.

Regular use of these wipes and sprays helps to keep your eyelid margins clean and free from blockages, which in turn supports better tear production and prevents irritation.

Medicated eye drops offer fast-acting relief for dry eye symptoms. These drops are specially formulated to provide instant hydration to your eyes and help reduce inflammation caused by dryness. They are particularly effective for patients experiencing irritation and redness.

Eye masks are a simple yet effective solution for treating dry eye symptoms. These heat masks are designed to be worn over your eyes, providing gentle warmth that helps open up blocked meibomian glands.

Omega-3 supplements are also an excellent way to support your eye health from the inside out. These healthy fats help improve the quality of your tears, making them more stable and effective in keeping your eyes lubricated.
